Type 1 Diabetes - Let’s Raise Awareness
Posted by Carlene Gabriel of Pedors Australia on 1st Jun 2015
Pedors Australia were fortunate to be present at a Diabetes Forum last year where one of
the guest speakers was Suzette Silva. Suzette’s son Tristan, aged twenty three months old
had been unwell and Suzette had to really raise a commotion to have testing done that she
suspected may yield results with her local G.P. Thank goodness for a mother’s instincts.
At 11.00pm that same night Suzette received a call from the hospital that changed their
lives, more particularly Tristan’s life forever, or until the day a cure is found for Type 1
Diabetes. They nearly lost Tristan that night and he’s had numerous hospital visits since,
a simple cold can be life threatening.
Suzette’s G.P. had been unaware that a twenty three month old baby could present with
Type 1 Diabetes. Since that time Suzette has devoted an enormous amount of time and
energy to raise awareness of Type 1 Diabetes in infants and children.
During Suzette’s talk she mentioned she was working on having some posters produced
to hang in Doctor’s waiting rooms advising people (and Doctors!) of the symptoms and
actions that should be taken if you have concerns.
Pedors Australia were happy to donate a pair of our Diabetic shoes to be auctioned with
all proceeds going to Suzette’s posters. Mark Cotza of Thirteen Design, Hallam, himself
the father of a child with Type 1 Diabetes was able to produce 500 Posters with the
proceeds of the auction!
A simple urine test or a finger prick test is all it takes to identify. Six people a day are
diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in Australia. Feel free to share this poster and spread the
word as far and wide as you can.
Many thanks,
Carlene
